Family Therapy

“Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.” ~ Virginia Satir

Virginia Satir, Salvador Minuchin, Jay Haley, Michael White, Murray Bowen, Harville Hendrix, Insoo Berg, Cloé Madanes, John and Julie Gottman, Carl Whitaker and many other pioneers significantly contributed to creating family therapy and couple's work. While I trained with Minuchin and learned about 'structural family therapy', I do not subscribe that one size fits all when it comes to the therapy or the therapist. As Dr. Minuchin has gotten older, he openly describes and encourages family therapist's to borrow from one another in the spirit of what is most effective for the family that you are working with.

I appreciate Virginia Satir's quote in that the environment of family is most often our most influential environment of our lives—both as children growing up and as adults seeking to form your own family. Also, when I use the term "family" I do not necessarily mean only your family of origin. Many of us have what we consider family that has no blood relation.

I suggest that if you and your family are exploring coming to family therapy or are ready to set up our first appointment, please call me and let's talk.
